classroom setting along with practical experience. Some of the course topics include
professional orientation and ethics, lifespan development, cross-cultural counseling,
children and adolescent counseling, crisis intervention, assessments and diagnostics,
and individual and group counseling, among others. Outside of the classroom, students
will engage in 750 hours of hands-on learning during two field-placement experiences.
Where You'll Go
The Counseling program is intentionally designed to give you the skills you need for
employment you wish to pursue in the counseling field. The Clinical Mental Health
Counseling specialty prepares students to work in diverse settings such as mental
health agencies, substance abuse centers, colleges, non-profit organizations, private
practice, and more, leading toward state licensure eligibility. The School Counseling specialty
track prepares students for employment as a professional counselor in K-12 school
settings, leading to a recommendation for K-12 School Counseling licensure (certification)
by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Counseling classes are held at WCU’s Biltmore Park Instructional Site in Asheville,
meeting in 3-hour blocks with options for both day and evening sections for flexibility.
All students are required to attend summer classes as part of the program completion
plan.
Prepare for a professional career as a school counselor in K–12 settings. The M.A.Ed.
in School Counseling leads to North Carolina K–12 School Counseling licensure and
provides options to pursue additional clinical qualifications.
The M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling trains students to support clients in
diverse mental health and community settings and prepares graduates for licensure
as a LCMHC-A in North Carolina.
Customize your academic journey: both the School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health
Counseling programs are available full-time or part-time to fit your schedule and
needs.
