What You'll Learn
Core courses enable students to develop interviewing, case management, and intervention skills, as well as study topics from mental health to the political, economic, and social conditions affecting disadvantaged populations. A cornerstone of the program is a supervised full-time field practicum at a human services agency. Students can select additional courses in areas such as, but not limited to, school social work, addiction, child welfare, and working with older adults. The program also hosts a variety of opportunities for community service and community-based research within the region.
Where You'll Go
Social Workers are found in medical centers, nursing homes, senior centers, mental health and addiction treatment centers, adoption agencies, schools, developmental centers, group homes, prisons, counseling centers, child welfare and social service agencies. Graduates qualify for beginning generalist social work positions such as a patient discharge planner, case manager, family specialist, or a social worker who orients residents to a long-term care facility. BSW graduates may also choose to pursue a master’s degree that will allow them to obtain a Clinical Social Worker License (LCSW) or work as a Macro Social Worker, inlcuding executive directors of not-for-profit agencies, community builders and public policy analysts. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics identifies social work as one of the fastest growing careers.

Field practicum allows students to develop and master professional skills while engaging with real clients and community organizations. Students gain critical experience in social work practice, preparing them for entry-level careers and graduate study.
