Western Carolina Power has once again been recognized for excellence in serving its customers and community.

WCP, 甜瓜视频app鈥檚 community-owned electric utility, received four Public Power Awards of Excellence from ElectriCities of North Carolina for its accomplishments during 2025. The awards were presented in the categories of Future-Focused, Strengthen Public Power, Provide Superior Power and Customer-Centered Innovation.

Western Carolina Power was one of only 19 public power utilities across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia recognized from approximately 90 eligible utilities. This marks the third consecutive year WCP has received an Award of Excellence and reflects the continued hard work and dedication of the utility鈥檚 employees.

鈥淭his recognition belongs to the entire Western Carolina Power team,鈥� said Reid Conway, Director of Energy and Utilities and General Manager of Western Carolina Power. 鈥淥ur employees work every day to provide safe, reliable electric service while improving how we operate and serve our customers. Receiving these awards for the third consecutive year shows that their hard work continues to make a positive impact across campus and throughout the surrounding community.鈥�

ElectriCities鈥� Public Power Awards of Excellence are based on strategic priorities designed to help public power utilities remain strong, responsive, and prepared for the future. The awards recognize accomplishments in five areas:

• Future-Focused recognizes utilities that plan for changing customer expectations, emerging technologies, and the long-term needs of their communities.
• Strengthen Public Power recognizes efforts to build awareness and support for locally owned and operated electric service.
• Provide Superior Power recognizes utilities that deliver reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity.
• Customer-Centered Innovation recognizes investments and improvements designed to provide better service to customers and communities.

WCP鈥檚 recognition in these categories reflects improvements across multiple areas of the utility. Recent efforts have included modernizing its metering infrastructure, improving customer service and billing operations, investing in electric system reliability, and planning for the utility鈥檚 future technology and infrastructure needs.

Unlike investor-owned utilities, WCP is owned and operated by 甜瓜视频app and is directly accountable to the customers and community it serves. WCP provides electric service to approximately 4,000 customers, including a small portion of the WCU campus and areas throughout the surrounding Cullowhee community.

ElectriCities of North Carolina provides services and support to more than 90 community-owned electric systems in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Its Public Power Awards of Excellence recognize utilities that demonstrate meaningful progress toward strengthening public power and delivering greater value to their customers.
