Director of University Scholarships

Hometown: Mills River, NC

Educational Background: B.S. Communication, WCU (2013); M.Ed Higher Education Student Affairs, WCU (2020) 

Professional background: My collegiate experience ignited a passion for expanding access to higher education and supporting student success. Over the past 12 years at 泫圖弝けapp, I have progressed throughout various professional roles building expertise in recruitment, scholarship strategy, and student support. My work has focused on advancing opportunities for students, strengthening scholarship programs, mentoring students and staff, and promoting student and staff well-being as a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor.

What I love about WCU:

 I love that everyone feels like family here as well as the feeling of peace and serenity that our campus atmosphere brings.

Jennifer Thomas
Jennifer Thomas

Senior Assistant Director of University Scholarships

Hometown:  Charlotte, NC
Educational Background:  B.S. Communication, WCU (2003); M.Ed. College Student Personnel, WCU (2006); M.A. Communication, UNCW (2025)

Professional background: I began my career working at Southwestern Community College as Executive Assistant to the Vice President for four years before joining the financial aid team in 2008. Over the past 18 years at WCU I have been a Financial Aid Counselor, Assistant Director of Financial Aid, Study Abroad Advisor, and am currently Senior Assistant Director of University  Scholarships.  

What I love about WCU: WCU has been my home since the summer of 1999 when I became a Catamount as a 1st Gen ASP student. I have been either a student or employee continuously since my freshman year. I love our community and beautiful mountains and cant imagine a better place to live and work.

 

Rachel Watkins
Rachel Watkins

Assistant Director of University Scholarships

Hometown: I grew up in Metro Atlanta but made my way to the mountains as quickly as I could. Haywood County has been home for the last decade.

Educational Background: Young Harris College non-degreed alum, theatre major (1997-99), B.A. Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education, Brevard College (2004)

Professional background: I have enjoyed a variety of interesting work experiences as my career path made its way to WCU from youth minister to community farm manager to chiropractic x-ray technician. Most recently I have served as Assistant to the Executive Director of Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center, Program Director for the Haden Institute, and, just prior to joining the team in the University Scholarships Office, as Stewardship Coordinator for the WCU Division of Advancement.

What I love about WCU: I love our setting in these mountains that have always felt like home to me, and I love WCUs legacy of and ongoing commitment to academic excellence, affordability, and access. Im proud of our positive impact on this special region of the world and absolutely delighted that I get to be even a small part of it all!

Sarah Tisinger

Assistant Director of University Scholarships

Hometown: Belville, North Carolina 

Educational Background: B.S. Emergency & Disaster Management, WCU (2023); M.P.A. Masters of Public Affairs, WCU (2026); Project Management Certification, WCU (2026) 

Professional Background: Following my time as an Undergraduate student alongside 泫圖弝けapp in the Spring of 2023, I was fortunate to obtain a position with AC Disaster Consulting Company as a Chief Administrative Office Intern; prior to my eleven-month term of service with AmeriCorps N.C.C.C. (National Civilian Conservation Corps). Closing out this venture, I worked with WCU as a Graduate Research Assistant, assisting in public policy research, and AmeriCorps Project POWER, supporting food distribution efforts for those in Buncombe County. Succeeding these endeavors, I then pursued a role as a Graduate Community Director with the University of North Carolina at Asheville's Housing and Residence Life Department for the 2025-2026 academic year.
 
What I love about WCU: Having obtained my Undergraduate and Graduate level degrees from Western Carolina University, what I love most is the affectual feeling of safety, security, and belonging. WCU fosters an environment of success, community, and togetherness. The memories gained at Western will forever remain with me! 

Dates and Deadlines

  • The scholarship application opens annually on October 1. Undergraduate applications are due February 1; graduate and doctoral applications are due August 1 (deadlines may vary by program).
