Savannah McGlothlin has gone above and beyond for her fellow students at Western Carolina University during election season.

Shes the vice president of the Student Democracy Coalition, a student organization dedicated to increasing civic engagement, and she invited every candidate in North Carolina to campus for an event last year.

You can tell voter turnout means a lot to the junior English education major and its being recognized. McGlothlin was among 232 college students across the country named as a representative of the 2025 ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenges student voting honor roll.

It is nice to be recognized for the effort, she said. Everyone in the Student Democracy Coalition puts in so much work to help this be a politically active campus in trying to take down any barriers to voting.

It's just nice to get as much awareness out there that we are actively doing something.

McGlothlin, a Kings Mountain native, has been involved with the Student Democracy Coalition since her freshman year.

Along with the student organization, she helped make sure there was a voting place on campus, made sure CatCards count as a valid voting ID and set up shuttles to off-campus voting places.

Efforts like hers aided WCU in being named a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting in November.

It was very rewarding. There were so many people with so many questions that I wouldnt have expected, McGlothlin said. This is one of the most politically active campuses in North Carolina, and we definitely like to think part of that is this because of us.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge is a nonprofit that aims to empower higher education institutions to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student democratic engagement.
