Guidelines & Best Practices

Create a Strategy

Every account should operate with a clear and intentional approach to content.Accounts without a defined approach tend to become inconsistent, repetitive, or inactive over time. A clear strategy helps guide content, platform choice, and long-term consistency.

  • Identify your primary audience (students, alumni, prospective students, etc.)
  • Define what value your account provides
  • Ensure your content supports your unit and aligns with the broader goals of Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵapp
  • Review performance regularly and adjust based on what resonates

Follow Policy

All official accounts are expected to operate within University policy and established procedures. These guidelines support , but do not replace, official policy requirements.

  • Share accurate, timely information
  • Respect privacy and confidentiality
  • Use platform-approved content and licensed materials
  • Represent the University in a professional and responsible manner

WCU Social Media Policy

Maintain Activity

Consistency builds credibility and engagement over time. It is better to post consistently with quality content than to post frequently without direction.

  • Post regularly with a clear purpose
  • Plan content in advance when possible
  • Monitor comments and messages
  • Respond to questions in a timely manner

Content that Connects

The most effective WCU content reflects real experiences and recognizable moments. Content should feel like WCU, not something that could come from anywhere.

  • Highlight content that is most engaging to your respective audiences
  • Focus on specific, relatable moments
  • Prioritize photos and video over text-heavy graphics
  • Create content that encourages interaction or action

Voice and Tone

Your account should feel clear, natural, and connected to the WCU community. Consistency in voice helps build trust and recognition.

  • Write like you’re talking to someone familiar with campus
  • Keep language straightforward and engaging
  • Avoid overly formal or generic phrasing

Visual Identity

Consistency in visuals strengthens the University’s overall presence. Strong visuals should support, not distract from your message. For a consistant brand identity, ensure content adheres to WCU brand guidelines.

  • Use official logos, colors, and brand elements
  • Maintain a cohesive look across posts
  • Use templates and resources when helpful, but stay within brand standards

Platform Focus

Not every platform serves the same purpose. A focused presence is more effective than a scattered one.

  • Focus on the platforms that best reach your audience
  • Adapt content to fit each platform’s style and expectations
  • Prioritize quality over quantity across channels

Accessibility (WCAG Guidelines)

Social media content should be accessible to all users. Following accessibility best practices improves the experience for your entire audience and supports compliance with evolving WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards.

  • Add captions to video content
  • Use alt text for images when available
  • Avoid placing important information only within graphics
  • Ensure strong contrast between text and background
  • Write clearly and avoid overly complex formatting

Ongoing Evaluation

Regularly assess how your account is performing.

  • Are you posting consistently?
  • Is your audience engaging with your content?
  • Does your content serve a clear purpose?

If not, it may be time to adjust your approach or consolidate efforts.
