The Department of Social Work

 

Social Workers help individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations overcome challenges in their everyday lives. Social Work is direct care support, case management, providing therapy, community building, research, policy development, advocacy, and so much more. Our generalist and advanced generalist programs prepare future Social Workers for micro, mezzo, and macro level social work. 

WCU’s Department of Social Work offers an in person Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree and Master of Social Work (MSW) degree that present students with a variety of career options from working in child welfare, integrated care, mental health, and addictive disorder settings to working in private practice, non-profits, social service administration, and policy.

Mission of the Department of Social Work

The mission of the Department of Social Work at Ìð¹ÏÊÓÆµapp is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to practice at the generalist (BSW) and advanced generalist (MSW) levels of Social Work practice. Congruent with the University’s mission to improve individual lives and enhance community development in the predominately rural Western North Carolina region, the Department seeks to prepare professionals who are committed to the core Social Work values of service, respect for all people, and the advancement of social and economic justice.

Programs in Social Work

The challenging curriculum covers a wide range of topics and hands-on experience both in it's course work and through participation in  Field Practicum an Field Practicum is the signature pedagogy of Social Work education. This indispensable piece of the curriculum gives students opportunities to gain practical experience in preparation for professional Social Work practice. Students are supported in the classroom as they gain applicable skills and through the Field Process.

Specialty Areas and Post-Master Programs

WCU offers professional development courses for social workers in the areas of addiction treatment, culturally based native health, and school social work.

MSW and Clinical Mental Health Counseling students will complete four elective courses focusing on addictive disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery. Additionally, they will complete their specialization year field placement or internship in an approved addictive disorder treatment setting.

Participation in the Child Welfare Education Collaborative Scholars Program is available at both the BSW and MSW levels.

This 12-hour certificate program provides a new approach to training for health professionals serving Native peoples, grounded in a tribal community. A certificate in Culturally Based Native Health will enable students to utilize their training in a health-related discipline and apply it to Southeastern Indian cultures.

MSW students interested in integrated care may participate in this specialty area and be eligible for a $25,000 stipend.

MSW students who apply for and are accepted to the School Social Work Licensure program must complete the online School Social Work elective (SOCW 528), an additional course from an approved list offered through the School of Education and must complete their specialization year field placement in an accredited school setting. Upon graduation, these students can apply for and receive North Carolina School Social Work Certification.
