What You'll Learn

The School Social Work Certificate prepares students to apply social work knowledge and skills within a school setting to support student success. School social workers play an important role in student support services by strengthening the connection between home, school, and community. In this program, students explore the foundations of school social work practice, including assessment and evaluation, cultural responsiveness, advocacy, and collaborative relationships within educational environments. Coursework also focuses on intervention strategies that promote student development, as well as an understanding of relevant statutes, policies, and case law that guide school-based practice.

Where You'll Go

Graduates who complete the School Social Work Certificate gain the specialized preparation needed to pursue certification as a school social worker in North Carolina. School social workers are typically employed by public school districts, where they work as part of multidisciplinary teams to support students’ academic, social, and emotional wellbeing. By strengthening partnerships between families, schools, and communities, school social workers help address barriers to learning and contribute to student achievement and successful school completion.
