Biography

Dr. Adam Harris is an <b>Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ìð¹ÏÊÓÆµapp</b>, a tenure-track position he began in <b>2025</b> after three years as an <b>Assistant Professor of Practice</b> in the same department. Before coming to WCU full-time in 2022, he spent over a decade at <b>Central Piedmont Community College with the last six years as Chair of the </b><b>Computer, Electrical, and Electronics Engineering Technology departments</b>.<br><br>His current research applies <b>machine learning </b>to different systems including<b> power systems fault detection, energy forecasting</b>, and hardware implementations of neural network models on <b>FPGAs, </b>in collaboration with colleagues in the department. He is also developing a novel approach to <b>robot locomotion</b>, supported by undergraduate researchers working in ROS2/Gazebo simulation and reinforcement learning.<br><br>Before entering academia full-time, Dr. Harris co-founded two education-technology companies, <b>Creatrex Education</b> and <b>SheekGeek LLC</b>, designing and producing hands-on robotics and fabrication kits used in museum exhibitions and STEM outreach programs internationally.<br><br>He has been recognized for his teaching with the <b>Board of Governors Distinguished Teaching Award</b>, the <b>Excellence in Mentoring and Engagement Award</b>, and the <b>Brinson Honors College Faculty and Staff Excellence Award</b>. He is a member of <b>IEEE</b>, <b>Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN)</b>, <b>ASEE</b>, and <b>Tau Beta Pi</b>.
